How it works

From quote to handover.

  1. Stone selection

We discuss the stone type and size that suits the application. Nick can show samples before you commit to a specification.

  2. Base preparation

Sub-base is excavated, compacted and formed. Falls are set before any concrete is placed.

  3. Pour and surface treatment

Concrete is placed with the agreed aggregate mix. A surface retarder is applied to hold the top layer while the body sets.

  4. Wash-back

Once the slab has set to the right hardness, the surface is pressure-washed back to reveal the stone. Timing matters here. Too early and it comes away too deep. Too late and it won’t wash back at all.

  5. Seal and handover

A penetrating or surface sealer is applied to protect the finish. The job is checked for consistency before handover.

Common questions

Answered straight.

How does exposed aggregate compare to plain concrete?
Exposed aggregate is harder wearing, more slip-resistant and better looking over time. It costs more to pour correctly but holds its appearance longer than plain concrete, which can look tired once it stains.
What stone colours and sizes are available?
Common selections in Gippsland include local river stones for a warmer earth-tone finish, pea gravel for a finer texture, and larger imported decorative aggregates for feature work. We bring samples to the quote visit so you can see the actual stone before committing. Aggregates photograph differently to how they look in the cured slab.
Does exposed aggregate need sealing?
Yes. Sealing protects the stone from staining and keeps the finish looking right. We seal as part of the job. Re-sealing every few years is recommended depending on traffic and exposure.
Can exposed aggregate be used for driveways?
It is one of the most common applications. The grip it provides when wet makes it well suited to driveways, paths and pool surrounds.
What areas do you cover for exposed aggregate work?
We are Sale-based and take exposed aggregate jobs across Gippsland, including Traralgon, Paynesville, Bairnsdale and surrounding areas.
