Your Driveway Will Crack. That's Not the Question.

I'll tell you something no one wants to hear when they're about to spend a few grand on a new driveway. Your concrete is going to crack.

Not might. Will. Somewhere, eventually. Anyone who promises you a slab that never cracks is either not being straight with you or doesn't understand the material they're working with. I'd rather lose the job than tell you a fairytale, so here's the real version.

Concrete is a rigid material. It shrinks as it cures, and once it's down, it moves with the ground underneath it. Ground moves. Clay swells up when it's wet and shrinks back when it dries out. A slab sitting on top of all that is going to feel it. So cracking isn't a sign someone stuffed up. It's the nature of the stuff.

So if it's going to crack anyway, what am I paying for?

Fair question, and it's the whole point of this. You're not paying to stop it cracking. You're paying to decide where it cracks. Three things do that job.

The mix

Concrete comes in different strengths, measured in MPa. A driveway that's going to have a car and a trailer and the occasional delivery truck on it wants a higher strength mix than a garden path. Match the mix to the actual loads and you've taken a big chunk of the risk off the table before the truck even arrives.

The steel

Steel through the slab holds the two sides of a crack together. So even if a hairline does appear, it stays shut. It doesn't open up into the kind of gap you catch a mower wheel in. This is a lot of the reason a proper quote costs more than a cheap one. The steel and the prep are the bits you never see, and they're the bits doing the work.

The joints

We cut control joints into the slab in the spots where a crack wants to go anyway. Concrete is going to relieve that stress somewhere. A joint gives it a neat, straight, deliberate line to do it along, so it goes there instead of wandering across the middle of your new driveway where you'll look at it every day.

The proof is in the comparison

Here's the difference laid out plainly. Pour a weak mix with no steel in it, and walk across it a year later. You'll find the cracks, and you won't like where they are. Pour the same slab properly, with the right strength, steel through it and joints cut where they belong, and you'll struggle to find a crack at all. And the ones that are there will be sitting quietly in a joint where they're meant to be.

Same material. Same weather. Same ground. The only thing that changed is the decisions made before and during the pour. That's the trade.

The cracks that matter and the ones that don't

Not every crack is a problem. Fine hairlines in the surface, or a neat line sitting in a control joint, are the slab doing exactly what it's meant to. The ones worth a phone call are different: a crack more than a few millimetres wide, one where the two sides have lifted to different heights, or one opening up at the edge of the slab. Why I'd rather tell you this now

Because the person who promises you crack-free concrete has just told you they'll blame you, or the weather, or bad luck, when it happens. I'd rather set the expectation straight up: it'll crack where we've decided it can, and nowhere you'll notice. Then when you look at it in five years and it's still tight and clean, you'll know exactly why.
