The Real Reason to Hire Someone Insured (It's Not the Paperwork)

4 August 20265 min read

Everyone will tell you to hire someone insured. It's good advice. But it usually gets explained in the most boring way possible, like it's a box to tick for your own protection. Public liability, workmanship warranty, all the words that make your eyes glaze over.

Let me tell you what it actually means on the ground, because it's got very little to do with the certificate on the wall.

We carry public liability insurance and we back every pour with a workmanship warranty. Good. But that's the easy bit to say. Anyone can say it. The real test of whether someone stands behind their work is what happens on the day something doesn't go to plan, and on outdoor work, something occasionally doesn't.

Concrete is weather-dependent, and weather does what it wants

Sometimes it rains on a pour. Sometimes a load turns up not quite right. These things happen to good tradespeople, not just bad ones. So the question that actually matters isn't whether it will ever go wrong. It's what happens if it does, and who picks up the phone.

Here's the difference between someone who's genuinely accountable and someone who isn't, and it's got nothing to do with the flashiest van.

  • You get a number that reaches a person, not a message bank
  • They tell you what happens if it rains on pour day, before you have to ask
  • When something's off, they're still on the job wanting to make it right, not gone quiet
  • They can reach for a plan B, because they know the fixes and they haven't already moved on

When a pour goes bad, there's usually a way to save the surface without ripping up six or seven grand of concrete. A resurface, a different finish laid over the top, a fix that works with what's there. But you can only reach for that if you know it exists, and if you're still standing on the job wanting to make it right. The person who took the deposit and stopped answering their phone doesn't have a plan B, because a plan B takes effort and they've already moved on.

I get called out to price fixes on jobs that were never mine. Someone's had concrete poured, something's gone wrong, and the bloke who did it has simply gone quiet. Stopped picking up. That's the risk that never shows up on a quote. It's invisible right up until the day you need it, and then it's the only thing that matters.

Accountability is a phone call, not a certificate

So when I say we're insured, that's true and it matters. But the thing I'd actually want you to take away is this. You'll have my number the whole way through the job. Nick. Not an office, not a message bank. Me. If something isn't right, you ring it, and I answer, and I come back and sort it out. That's what the warranty means in practice. It's not a document. It's a person who turns up.

That's also part of why we're not the lowest quote you'll get. The low number often comes from someone who's priced the concrete and nothing else. No plan for when it rains. No coming back. When it goes fine, you've saved a few hundred bucks. When it doesn't, you're the one holding it, and there's no one on the other end of the phone.

I'd rather be the quote that's a bit dearer and still answering in five years.
