What You're Actually Paying a Qualified Concreter For
Most people watch a concrete job for about twenty minutes. The truck backs up, the wet concrete goes in, a couple of blokes spread it around and smooth it off. Looks simple. Looks like something you could nearly do yourself with a mate and a slab of beer.
That bit is the easy part. I don't say that to talk it up. I say it because the pour is genuinely the most straightforward thing that happens all day. The trade is everything that happens before the truck turns up, and the twenty minutes after it drives off.
A concreter is half a dozen trades in one
Here's how I think about it. A concreter is half a dozen trades stitched into one, and the pour is the only one you get to watch.
Half a plumber
Run a drain or a downpipe through a slab and you have to get the falls and the penetrations right before a drop of concrete goes down. Once it's gone off, it's gone off. Get a drain wrong and the fix isn't a patch over the top. It's cutting up a finished slab and starting that section again. So the plumbing gets thought through, and pegged out on the ground, while there's still time to move it.
Half a geologist
Footings and slab thickness get sized off the soil, not off a guess. Reactive clay through Traralgon and the Valley swells up when it's wet and shrinks back when it dries, and it will move a slab that wasn't built for it. Sand out towards the Lakes won't hold an edge on its own. Rock wants something different again. You read what's actually under the block and pour for that, not for whatever was under the last job across town.
Half a draftsman
When an engineer specifies steel in a certain spot, it's there for a reason. Knowing the reason is what tells you which bits are non-negotiable and which bits you've got a bit of room to move on when the site throws you a surprise. And sites always throw you a surprise. Reading a plan properly is the difference between building what was designed and building what looks about right.
All of a finisher
Then you're all of a finisher. Placing, floating, trowelling and curing are four separate skills with four separate timings, and the weather moves every one of them. Trowel too early and you seal water into the surface. Leave it too late and you're fighting a slab that has already started to go hard. Miss the curing and the top wears thin in a couple of years. None of it shows on the day. It shows later.
That's the theme with concrete. Get the hidden stuff wrong and nothing looks off when you're standing there admiring it. It looks off in a year, when the slab has had a summer and a winter to tell on you.
What actually happens before the truck turns up
Here's the part no one watches, because it happens on the days before the pour. This is where a job is actually won or lost.
- Set-out and levels. We peg the shape, set the falls so water runs where it should, and check the finished height against the door thresholds, the crossover and the drainage.
- Excavation to depth. Dig out the topsoil and any soft spots until we're onto something that will hold, and cart the spoil away.
- Base prep. Bring in crushed rock, spread it and compact it in layers. A slab is only ever as good as the base under it.
- Formwork set to fall. Box up the edges dead straight and to the right height, because the formwork decides the shape you're stuck with.
- Steel. Mesh or bar up on chairs at the right height in the slab, tied off, with extra where the loads are heaviest.
- Drainage and penetrations. Any pipes, pits or downpipe connections go in and get checked now, while we can still move them.
By the time the truck backs up, the thinking is done. The pour is just the last step of a job that's mostly already finished.
So what does the qualification actually mean?
I hold a Certificate III in Concreting. The code is CPC30320 if you want to look it up, and it's the nationally recognised trade qualification for concreting in Australia. It's a full trade, taught from scratch and finished properly, not a weekend ticket. What it actually covers:
- Reading plans and setting a job out from them
- Formwork and edge detail
- Steel reinforcement, placement and tying
- Placing, compacting and finishing concrete
- Curing and protecting a fresh pour
- Doing all of it safely, on house jobs and bigger commercial work
Now, plenty of good concrete gets poured by people who never sat that qualification, and I've got no argument with any of them. Some of the best hands I know learned it on the tools. This isn't me telling you everyone else is dodgy.
Here's the honest version of why it matters. Concrete goes sideways sometimes. The weather turns, a load comes in wrong, the ground does something you didn't expect. When that happens, being taught the theory is what tells you why it's happening and what to actually do about it, instead of hoping it'll be right. That's the part you're hiring. Not the pour. The judgement when the pour doesn't go to plan.
What you're actually paying for
We sit medium to high on price, and I'll never pretend otherwise. What you're paying for is the part of the job you never see:
- The prep and the base, done properly, so the slab has something solid to sit on
- The right steel in the right spots, sized to the loads and the soil
- Everything around the pour looked after, so your fences, gardens and paths are how we found them or better
- Someone who knows why each of those calls is being made, and what to do when the pour doesn't go to plan
The value doesn't show up on quote day. It shows up in five years, when the slab still looks like the day we left.
